Holed Up is the nostalgia rewind for the millennial brain (and beyond). Each week Chase, Kyle, and Andrew are holed up together with the movies from their youth. How do they look under the lenses of fully formed brains? Find out each week as the gang rewatches movies from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s to see if nostalgia is truly a dangerous game to play.
Holed Up
Remember The Titans
Today, we remember everything about the Titans, as we look back at the classic sports film.
In 1971 high school football was everything to the people of Alexandria. But when the local school board was forced to integrate an all black school with an all white school, the very foundation of football's great tradition was put to the test.
Hello everybody, and welcome to Hold up the show where we dive deep inside your childhood nostalgia. Pull the movies from your past out to see if they hold up. I'm hold up with Andrew and Andrew. Who else are we hold up with today?, John Jingleheimer Smith. Welcome back. John Jingleheimer Smith. Also known as Kyle.
It's not, it's Schmid. It's Jingleheimer Schmidt. Yeah. John, John. No, no, no. This is a different person. It's a different person altogether. Who? No one would ride a jingle about you. Huh? Describe, describe this person. He's American. He's not German, so Okay. You haven't told me much about them. I, there's not much to to know about him.
He's from the Midwest. He's boring. He works at like an Amazon warehouse and is overweight and has horrible dieting issues. And there's not much to talk about Kyle that's spends who he is. He spends his weekends grilling. Yeah. Not, well. He seem very satisfied with his lot in life right now., He's just stagnant, but like, he's so used to this stagnation that Yeah, I guess he's satisfied and he tells people when he goes to church on Sunday, he's feeling blessed, but he doesn't go to church every Sunday.
It's like once every two months. Right. And is this, what kind of church are we talking about here? , Methodist United. Methodist. Methodist. Yeah. Anything's better than Baptist. That's what I gotta say.
Woo. Well, speaking of Heartland, we went to the Heartland of America and Virginia, and we saw, remember the Titans continuing our football season? Love here, Andrew, you remember the Titans, don't you? Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm not talking about the, the group from Nashville that makes everybody forget every Sunday.
You mean the Oilers? Yeah. Yeah. Uh, I don't give a fuck about them. I'm kidding. I actually, you know, I don't, I don't have any disdain towards that organization, but yeah, I, they are, they are my organization. I have a lot of disdain for them right now. Hey, I think they're actually, they don't, they're on the path.
They're on the path. I think they're on the right path, truthfully. Um, truth. But, but yes, about this movie. I do remember this movie. Yeah, I remember it. I think all of us remember it well. So one could say you remember the Titans one could say I remember those titans. Yeah. Before we start remembering though, Kyle, I want you to try again.
I want you to tell us how you're feeling using football terms. Yes. Oh, so today, um, today it's like, we're in the third quarter, um, you know, the home team is down by at least two touchdowns in a two point conversion. So 16 points. , So we're 16 points. Yeah. So, you know, if things aren't looking good, defense is, is toppling over, but the home team has the ball and.
And they decided to try a, , get up on the line of scrimmage and, , put the ball in play. And we tried to forward lateral, and it, it was immediately like the person who caught was immediately run over, , by the biggest defensive lineman they had. , And he severed a part of a spinal cord and it fumbled the ball.
, And then the way team has the ball and they take it all the way down. Touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. , And , that player that had his spinal cord severed, , nobody really knew about it. They just , let him stay on the field for a second. Didn't believe him.
, And now he's unconscious. , Long story short, he dies. So that's, that's the energy level right now. My favorite part of that was a forward lateral chase. How do you feel about that? Like, it's impossible. Well, no, my favorite part of the story was the death, , Kyle, so this is what it feels like when you're about to be a father.
No, no. , This is other things. The father stuff is exciting. That's gonna be great. Can't wait. But , this is a, this is unrelated. , This is just what football is, whatever people think of football, you think of loss of mobility at some point in your life. And that's like, I think I speak for everybody when I say like, that's America's pastime, right?
There is like c CT being Yeah. It's like, yeah, exactly. It's like being, , in a bowling alley with your, at your kid's birthday when you're 38 and , you shit yourself. 'cause you forget where you are and everybody looks at you weird and then you have a whole episode. That's football.
That's football. Kyle, when was the last time you shit yourself? December. Oh wait, okay. Very, very specific. But if you go to our Patreon right now and donate $5, we'll get Kyle to tell you the entire story of how he shit himself in December of oh eight in December. , But moving on, Andrew, let's start with you.
, Let's talk about what you remember about the Titans. , I remember going to see it in theaters. , I remember everyone talking about how great of a movie it was. , It was one that like everyone agreed on and enjoyed and talked about. , I remember being like overwhelmingly filled with, , a feel good movie when you watch when this was that to a tee?
Especially when I was, you know, eight, nine years old. , I remember loving it. I remember everyone loving it. , It was great. And for me, , this was. A, a real introduction to Denzel Washington as an actor, because I didn't think I'd seen many of his movies up to that point. Well, I don't think any of 'em were rated in , the category that you were gonna be able to see.
Probably, probably not lot. A lot of 'em were too mature. , But yeah, it was all great impressions, all great memories. There wasn't really anything negative I can even, think of in regards to this movie. It was universally loved. Do you have a favorite line from this movie? , What's the one, what does he say to Yost right?
He said, you're a Hall of Famer in my book, after he had just been, axed out mm-hmm.
Of the Hall of Fame for not throwing the game and getting Herman fired, you know? Mm-hmm. He said to him, you're a hall of famer. And in , my book coach, and they grabbed the football and raise it, and it was just like, ah, they get you every time. I mean, I'm, I got, I've got chills right now after just repeating it.
Oh, that one? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Again, , it's a little cheesy, but like, it hits you and you can't deny it. It does though.
Um, this is one of those movies where the lines can be cheesy at times, but they're in the right spots and the acting is good enough and the direction is good enough, and the cinematography is good enough that like, you are bought in and you believe everything, even though it is a little, a little, you know, cheesy.
But I agree with Andrew. I think there's a couple points where you're like, it just kinda like hits you. You're like, damn, okay. I think this is probably one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. This is a Disney movie, right? Yeah, it's like, it's Disney. Disney in the beginning. Okay. , I wanted to make sure we said that before we said that.
, But this is one of my favorite Disney movies and it's probably one of the better Live action Disney movies that exists. I would say, I would put this. Right up there with like an up kind of movie. And , the quality of which I don't like watching up 'cause it's too sad. But like, um, up Up was one of those movies too that like, that whole movie was made in 10 minutes and like, the opening 10 minutes is all you need.
Exactly. They have just ended there and everything else is set up from there. There. Yeah. Yeah. But like, this is one of those movies where I feel like I wanna watch it. Like I watch Pirates of the Caribbean, like it's, it is a strong draw to watch this movie just because of like, yes, the nostalgia. But like, again, I noticed some things watching it as an adult that I don't e didn't even pick up on when I was a kid.
, And , it's a very cool movie to watch, having not watched it since I was a kid. , Because it, hits on all of the things that are kind of going on in our society right now, , to some way in one, some way, shape or form. And I think that this is a really, we'll get into it later, but I think this is like a really, it's a really good watch for now.
A time days, the not so fun now times. I was gonna ask, I was gonna ask both of you and Andrew, we can start with you. How much of it, how much of the race relations did you pick up on this and when you were a kid? Not so much now. Tons. I think this was one of like the first movies that. Really opened my eyes to that world.
, 'Cause I was right around the age when I would learned about, , Martin Luther King and civil rights and things of that nature that were, , far different than the world that I lived in now. Far, far beyond what I knew of everyday life. This was one of the first fictional, displays of what racial tensions and segregation and real life racism in modern day society were like.
I don't, there were probably some other movies, but this was a probably one of the first, especially for, , that eight, 9-year-old, , age group for myself. , So yeah, it was very poignant in, in that regard. Kyle, , did you pick up on anything when you were a kid or was it just kind of like a football sports movie?
No, , this is something, this is one of those movies I think is a real, we watched this in school, that's, remember, that's right. Yeah. We watched this in grade school. I think we did too. Now that you bring that up. Yes. Uhhuh, , I think I vividly remember like this being a movie in like a religion class or something near the end of the year.
, And , that's in, that's on the west side Cincinnati that we watch this too, which just kind of tells you like, this movie's sticking power. , If you're from the west side and you've lived outside of the west side, you know what I'm talking about.
, But this is one of those, . Movies that I can, I feel like I can show my children to teach them about inequities and like inequalities and racism and being a bigot and like that, that's how I remember this movie when I was a child, was like, , I, it taught me a lot about that by just watching some of this movie and, yeah.
Yeah, I mean, I agree. I, I think as a kid too, like talking about what I remember from this movie, this was a big watch in the Barnett household because, , growing up in Alabama, a big football family, , just like anyone else in the state, this was a lot of fun to watch as a kid, and it just kind of taught me to, be respectful to everybody no matter what their walk of life was.
And that's what I learned from the movie as a kid. And , there's some powerful moments in this movie, which we'll talk about more in detail, but one, I talked about Andrew's favorite line, my favorite part in this movie is where, , Bertie sticks up for, , rev in Oh, rev, yeah. Mm-hmm. , During , the fall camp.
And yells at his friend for not blocking. And then him and Julius have that whole like, strong sigh. That was a great moment then that, that gave me chills again. Like, just to see that because it's like that unity that first time where you really see it. Right. You know? And so, , this leads me to a big point is you wanna know what, , a lot of people said about this movie when it was being written, cut the race shit.
Of course they did. Especially no surprise. Especially late nineties, early two thousands. Yeah. We don't need none of that. Just make it about football. That was a big, , that was a big thing. But, , it is funny 'cause we did Armageddon, right? Armageddon is the reason that, remember the Titans got made interesting.
Is it really? Yeah. Jerry Brocker and then, what's his name? The guy who played Yost? Yep. What, what's Will Patton? Yeah. Great actor. Honestly, I think he's a really solid actor. , So the screenwriter . He wrote Ali. Okay. Okay. So he moved to Virginia and found, that the town was more integrated than other cities Uhhuh he'd been to or other towns.
And he was like, ah, I wonder how this happened. And they told 'em Yeah, it was basically a football team. That integrated the entire town, and he thought the story was , super powerful. Obviously, we're not gonna get super deep into this in the podcast.
He made it into a movie. He wrote the screenplay to be a fictionalized movie. It's very fictionalized. Yeah. , There's so much stuff wrong with it in like, what really happened. , We should get into some of that. We'll, like, we should absolutely talk about, how this is so fictionalized, but we, we, yeah.
And we'll, that's to tear it apart, but just, you know, to, to show you kind of the difference. Yeah. But we'll strike into that. , He thought , the story was so good. He wrote the screenplay and sent it off, and Jerry Bruckheimer liked it. He was like, Hey, , this movie needs to be made. We love it. , And he went to Disney with it, and Disney was like, no, cut the race shit.
All this other stuff. But Disney let him make Armageddon. And then Armageddon was so successful for Disney that Jerry Bruckheimer was like, Hey, since I made you a successful movie, you gotta make this one now. And Disney was like, we'll give you $20 million.
So Armageddon was successful in terms of how much money it made. It was a successful movie. Y'all don't forget that. Yeah, don't watch it though. , There's a way you can make money success, but you can't make big screen success. , So they end up doing that. But Disney had some trade offs. , They didn't cut the race stuff, obviously, but they did trim it to a PG rating instead of radar.
This, the original script was radar, which I'm, I kind of wanna see that cut. I bet that would've been more like Coach Carter esque. Yeah. Um, law. Another great movie. But, uh, lot of slurs being thrown around. Yeah. , But I think that that makes it gritty. You know? It makes it more real. When we get to the end, when we talk about if it holds up or not, I'm gonna retouch on this, but my biggest worry going back as an adult, I was like, as a kid, this hit me really well, but as an adult, I'm gonna wonder if it feels real enough and gritty.
And in that time period, and I'll answer how I felt at the end, but to find out that there was an r-rated cut was interesting to me. Yeah. I didn't know that. And I'd be, you know, I, I'd be curious to, to see that, be able to see that. Just , to compare 'em. Right. , But yeah. Uh, do we, we wanna dive into some, , some numbers here, some, some juicy numbers.
I already gave you the guys, the budget. Kyle, do you want to go ahead and guess what this movie made? Do you think it was successful, Kyle? No, I don't think so either. But go ahead. Give me a, give me a number. , I wanna say I do think it was successful. I'm, I'm gonna guess, I'm gonna guess they like.
Monetarily speaking, yes. I think that it probably made generously cost 20. They, it cost 20 million to make was, or that so much they gave him budget was 20 million.
, Actually budget was 30 million. Okay, okay. 30 million. So he probably puts, he probably got other backers in there. Cool. So what I'm thinking, I'm gonna guess they made 58 million, so it grossed worldwide, 137 million. Wow. So , it did pretty darn well. , Good. It, it blew that budget outta the water and, , pretty much made it three times over.
, I remember it being very successful as a kid. So I, , that 138 does not surprise me. I feel like that 137 million probably, , from then till now, I'm sure , it's made even more. 'cause think about how often this gets airplay on tv. How many people bought it on VHS or even DVD at that point? I don't know if DVD was a thing at, was at that point. , We had it on DVD. Yeah.
I feel like this is one of the more popular sports movies ever made. So I think it was a resounding success. Why didn't we get the sequel? Remember the Titans two in space, uh, and why were they in Space Chase? The planet became too segregated again. Mm. So they took the team to space.
Is that, was this so they could colonize in a those damn space people? Ugh. They didn't do any drilling in space, did they? Yeah, of course. This is also an Armageddon. They were fracking. Remember Armageddon, the space sequel? God and what's his name? Patton. Patton was absolutely the lead in this one. Yeah.
Disney call me, we can write this. We make an album, make millions upon millions, hundreds of millions. I need a budget of like 45 million. At least I need a budget of 125 million. Yeah, , no. Less than that. Sorry. This is gonna be bigger than anything it's ever made. This could be you, Andrew, you and Kyle.
This could be your calling card. This could get you right back into the acting field. Fuck Kyle. Shit. What do we do? , Kyle, you'll have to grow your hair out and become sunshine. You gotta say yes. Say yes. Yes. I'm saying. I'm saying yes. , Yes. , Let's talk about some of the people in this movie.
We talked about Denzel. Denzel was a big star at the time, and that's how they also cooped Disney into making this movie is 'cause they attached Denzel from the beginning. , We also have to mention, , Ryan Gosling is in this movie. He was one of his young, he was a young Gosling young boy, and he is an absolute liability at Corner, which we'll talk about later.
He was the worst, slowest fuck. He was probably one of the worst corners I've ever seen play at this point. Yeah, pretty close to it. , I don't know of a worse secondary than right now in football. Who would you say, who would you compare him to? , Kevan Thomas on Yeah. UK's team. One of the worst cornerbacks I've ever seen play.
He was like a fourth stringer at Maryland, and we took him in the portal and he absolutely blows. I'm sorry, Kevan,, if you're listening to this, he's not, he's not. He, he is, he's not. He's got his NIL money. Dory. He, uh, yeah. He's a major liability. But , no one gives a fuck about Kentucky football.
So I just know that from my perspective. But back to the big names, we got a young Hayden Panier. Kate Bosworth, , obviously Will Patton, , Gregory Allen Williams, he was the offensive line coach. , He's in righteous gemstones. He's a, been a working actor , for decades.
, He's, , what's his name? He's Martin Amari in Righteous Gemstones. Kyle, if you remember, that's, , gemstones, like right hand man. He has like, he has some sort of like, either , he has a dialect that he plays into, but, it is him. It is, , Gregory Allen Williams. Uh, who are, what are there some other, , names that we're forgetting that , are worth mentioning here?
Ethan, what's his name? , I can't remember his name. Ethan Hawk? No, he plays the big guy. Oh yeah. The guy that plays LASIK or, mm-hmm. Oh yeah. Yeah. , He's lost a bunch of weight now. He is like very, very, oh. Donald. Donald, , Faison. Yeah, Donald Faison. Uh, Pete. Yeah. From, , scrubs. Yeah. How could we forget about him?
You know, he said the only reason he got this role is because he'd been working out all the time and, 'cause he had no roles coming up, so he just worked out. He had nothing else to do, so he just wore a crop top to , the rehearsal. And they were like, yeah, you're hired. LOL He looked like a football player.
I mean, it fucking stacked, bro. He was? Yeah. Oh yeah. Ethan. Ethan Suli, his name Suli. That's, yes. Suli. He's been in a bunch of stuff, but yeah, , he is not that size anymore. He looks ripped actually. What do you remember him from when you watched this movie as a kid? There's only one correct answer., I don't know.
Boy Meets World. Was he in that? Yeah, he was the bully. Holy shit. Was he? He was. That's, I didn't even realize that. I picked up on it instantly when I saw, I knew that he looked familiar. I could never place it, but. , Damn. You are right. That's what it's, we should do, we should do a Boy Meets World episode one dime.
Should we? I think we should. Only if we can do it naked. I mean, we're naked now. You're right. , Cool. , Let's dive in guys. Let's just do the blow by blow and maybe we'll break down some of the inefficiencies with the true story in the script. But, , Kyle, where does this movie take place and where does it start off?
It takes place clearly in the south. , It's, wait, do we consider Virginia the South? Yes. There you is. Like Missouri to you, because I feel like Missouri is that weird little area of the country too. So there are parts of Virginia that are absolutely the South. Mm-hmm. Like western part of Virginia, Southern Virginia.
That is very southern, that is old school southern. The further north you get the more Mid-Atlantic it is. Like DC area is no longer south. That's, but back in the day, yeah. That's why I put, , Virginia, like Missouri. It's kind of in a weird spot where it's like hovering over different territories.
Although I do say that the history of Virginia is very southern. Oh, yeah. So I mean, the, the Civil War literally ended in that state, and that was one of , the Confederate states, like Yeah. Historically speaking it is, but the further north you get, and especially today, it's not even close to the south.
Right. Northern Virginia is Mid-Atlantic, almost like northeast at this point. Mm-hmm. Um, but back then, yeah, , it was a different type of southern though. Mm-hmm. It was a lot more progressive than the south because mm-hmm. You had DC that's what's happened there. Yeah. , DC and all the federal workers, the people that came there from across the country, that just spread out to, , Maryland , and Virginia all around that entire circumference to the point where it was not really south at, at all after a few decades.
But yeah. Long story short, it was definitely a southern state back in the sixties and seventies. What's happening in this southern state now to open this movie? Kyle? , Wait, how does this open? What do we, I just watched, they're attending a funeral. That's right. Yes. It opens , at a graveyard. We start where we will end.
, And yeah, they're at, everybody's at a funeral. , Do they say who died at that point or no? Or they just kind of go there? It just, it's just a foreshadowing it, it's just narrated by the daughter. And she's like, she's like, this is the story. Remember the titans? There you go. Enterprising heavily. , And ,, we're introduced to, , bill Yost as he's coaching this team in like this football practice for Hammond High School.
, As what they're shown on , their pads and the coaches polo. , As a big, I guess a rally is going on. ,. It's almost like a racial, a riot's. A rally. It's riot. Yeah, it's like a riot. Yeah. It's, , they give you brief exposition on it because you can hear it in the background or people talking about it on news.
It's like what? , Some kid had been shot by police or something like that. Yeah, something like that. Yeah. So there's like some racial tensions in town and people are. At wits end. And it is very much white side of things and a black side of things, and they're about to come to blows. , And , then what we get, Andrew?
I think they're practicing and, , , they somehow get word as to what's happening downtown. This is Jerry Bertie, , Ray and a few others. And they get in that truck , and , they get outta dodge. They quickly leave practice 'cause they're gonna go down there and they're gonna riot and protest for whatever reason.
I think they said somebody's breaking into the old Craig store or something. Something like that. , Some guy's store getting broken into. , They're ready to defend. And before they, they get down there,, they're right at the edge of , the riot, if you will. But, , Yost goes after him.
, I think he's the one. He doesn't, he's the one who gets in the truck and drives down there. I think those boys, they run down there 'cause they're not too far away from the town center. He gets in the truck and right before , they get in the crowd. He like cuts 'em off. He's like, stop this shit.
Yeah. He's like, don't, you're, you're making a mistake. And this is our introduction to, to who Yost is. Yost is. And he seems like , a solid man. Yeah. Like at this point. Mm-hmm. , A fun fact too. I have a Bill Yost autograph. , That my, yeah. Shit. That my dad got me. 'cause he's from Florence, Alabama and lived in Huntsville after he retired.
, Rolled damn tide for a little bit. Yeah. Roll Damn Tide. My dad met him at a conference and he signed a piece of paper for me, and this was after this movie came out. Shout out to dad meeting Bill. Yes. Very cool. Very cool. Sounds like a nice guy. Yeah. Said he was amazing. At this point they start talking about , the integration, , of the school. Like we get some, like news blurbs and stuff like that, talking about how TC Williams is going to be an integrated school coming up.
Mm-hmm. , I don't remember the, the exact details, but we get introduced to Herman Boone pretty quickly here. Mm-hmm. Because , he's being filled in on a job that he's getting. Yes. , While Bill Yos is being informed of a job, he will be not getting. Yes. And it's the same job that they're, , essentially being briefed on.
, And the weird thing is, as a kid, , this plot moves so quick. It does is like two and a half minutes, there is nothing going on. Mm-hmm. And, I kind of appreciate that they, they get to the point. It's very, , but , as a kid, I was confused on that and now I get it as an adult reading the behind the scenes.
So basically they were combining, Andrew, you have some information on this. The four schools in the area, there were three schools in Alexandria. I don't know the names, I could look 'em up, but there were three schools. One of 'em was Hammond, which we see at the beginning. Yes. That's where Bill Yost was coaching.
Yep. , There was TC Williams, I'm pretty sure. Yeah. And then there was the other one and they all three combined to make the new TC Williams. So it's pretty much a mega school, a mega high school. , Fun little fact the schools had already integrated by 1965 in this area. I thought so too. , Disney of course took the liberties to make it seem like 71, the year 71 was when they finally integrated.
But no, they had already been integrated. They simply just made a conglomerate of free high schools. So all three high schools were already integrated. And every single high school in that region was, , desegregated. They just combined and made a mega high school of three in the area. , And in this movie, they're saying basically when they made the new high school, they decided to.
Higher Boone is the head coach. Yeah. Mm-hmm. And all the white people of the town are up in arms on this. Yeah. They, and then, because Yost has been their guy for, for years now, dude, he's like been successful. He's been very successful. He's won championships. He's a future high school football hall of famer, but income's Herman Boone.
And in the movie, , he came from like North Carolina or something like that. Mm-hmm. Well, it's where he is really from too. That is where he is actually from. Yes. Uh, Mount Erie or something like. Yeah. Um, mm-hmm. But it's this outsider who's black, , who's going to lead the charge of the football team for their newly integrated, desegregated high school.
And all the white folks are like, no, I'm not doing that. Yeah. And like some of the players are like revolting and, , I'm not gonna pay play for this coach. Yeah. And, what's his name? , Herman Boone pays, Yost to visit at his home. And he was like, if you wanna be my defensive coordinator, I'll have you.
And Boone or Yost was like, I think I'll walk, I'm gonna do my own thing. Yeah. But best of luck. Yeah. , In this first like 10 to 15 minute span, this is all that happens. But you can feel the, they do a good job of the tension in the town. , And you get. Glimpses of people being very angry at this choice.
Mm-hmm. And it seems like there's that one scene where the school board head goes, goes to tell Bill Yos, he visits him at his, his home and he's telling him basically that Boone is gonna be the new head coach of TC Williams. It's, it's the board's choice. There's nothing I can do. Right. We love you, but there's outta my hands.
So there's a powerful line in this scene that it's, it just still sticks with me. . It's, and it's, it's, it's nothing but a, a throwaway line in it. But he says basically, we gotta give them something.
God help us all. And that's still really hit me, you know? Mm-hmm. I probably think it hit me harder now as an adult than it did when I was a kid. Why I, I don't know. It's just like, you feel bad for giving another person equality and like, and to even throw God into this, who created all people, right?
Mm-hmm. If you, if we're going the religious route, it's like, you know, it just feels like it really kind of stuck with me a little bit. Mm-hmm. Interesting. I mean, not everyone was progressive at that point. Yeah. You know what I mean? And I, and I totally get it. Makes sense. I, I, this line makes sense.
I think it's just a really good line. Yeah. 'cause it really establishes how everyone in the town feels. And , it kind of sucks in the other way around because he wasn't hired to be a good head coach, which he was.
He was hired to try to resolve the situation we had at the beginning where, , there was race tension over this, a shooting. They, they never say it was some sort of racial,, yeah. Situation. And, and so to, akin to the 1960s to early, early seventies. So, and to smooth it over, they just hire a black coach, which is mm-hmm.
It's pretty aggressive for pretty aggressive area that's just getting quote integrated. Yeah. By movie standards. So yeah, you're gonna have some uproar. You're gonna have some backlash. 'cause those whites back then, , they didn't wanna change. They didn't wanna play for, and we'll talk more about that here in a second, but coach Yost players, the white players. , They threatened to hold out and not even go for the team this year. Which I think is what inspired Yost to say, Hey, I'm gonna swallow my pride and I'm gonna stick around to keep these boys in line to keep things, , even keel.
So we still have a football team Yeah. We're fighting for, and cheering for , the reason he joins Boone is to make sure that the kids have a future. Yeah. 'cause , he doesn't want them throwing their future away over some petty, petty squabble.
Mm-hmm. And he even like talked at the beginning, he said something to the effect of like, I care about my, my players, like they're my sons. Mm-hmm. And it goes way beyond the football field, which any good football coach, it is far more than just the game. It's about seeing these people off past the football field, later on their life, making sure they're set up for success.
, Being the good coach that he is, he, , stays true to his guns and decides, like I said, to swallow his pride and stick around and how he, , introduces himself to that. They're in and team, they're , they're in this gymnasium and we get like a very famous line for all the kids that grew up in the nineties, early two thousands, where, , Donald Faison is there.
All the black players who are trying out for this team are excited. And, , they're all like dancing and celebrating and the music in , this movie is phenomenal.
So good. It's really good. It has one of the best soundtracks in any movie that I've ever seen. It's so, it hits, it's so good. Hits. It hits on every level. Perfect. This one Anchorman has a great soundtrack. Like there are a couple that have wonderful sound. This is like right up there. Honestly. A lot of Tarantino movies have great soundtracks.
That's true. But this one, it hits for the, the era it hits for the feelings. It's kinda like that Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. A hundred percent. It just matches everything so perfectly. And the, all the music's so good. You lose yourself in it and you start singing to the music.
Yeah. And then it, but they, the way that they match each song, like James Taylor in it, it just fits the moment. Mm-hmm. , So they're kind of singing some of these songs and having a good time. And Coach Boone walks in all a Nick Saban style. , No happiness at all. Oh, he, he sets the tone right away. He set right away.
And mm-hmm. And Donald Faison has his hand up. 'cause he is like gonna, like he was doing the black power thing. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. He has his, so like his, uh, his, his fist up in the air. Yeah. And he goes, what are you doing? Put your hand down. Mm-hmm. Why are you smiling? He's like, football's fun.
Football's fun, huh? You think you think football's fun? I think he's Oh, you think well, football's fun. You think you think that or you know that? What do you think, you think you still think football's fun? No. Yes sir. Yes sir. Yes sir. You think football's fun? Yes sir. He is like, no running. It's almost like a military thing he's doing with him.
It's very , it's a hundred percent military game, mind game. He pretty much gets him to like, walk back what he said about football being fun. He, at the end he's like, no, football is not fun. Mm-hmm. Not, not fun. What? Not fun, sir. Thank you, sir. , And then he basically says, we're gonna see how much fun we're gonna have in camp.
And that sets the tone. And then all of a sudden his meeting is interrupted. Wait, I want, I wanna touch upon this. Wasn't, , LASIK the only white guy in there? Yeah, he runs in, yeah. Late and he's like, just moved here from a naval town. Someone said football. So I came running and he's the only white guy there, and they're just staring a hole through him.
But he's not faced at all. He doesn't give a shit. He just wants there be part of something. Oh yeah. I think he, he starts singing, like, well, he doesn't start singing with them right away, but later on down the line. , But , he fits in, , to an extent he's still kinda the oddball out, but like, it's no, no problem to him.
He's where he wants to be. Yeah. And then chase what happens next? So the, and then, , coach Yost and his players, the white players enter the room and then you can just, they do a really good job the way that they enter. You can hear the music kind of swelling a little bit, and then you can just feel the tension between everybody. I, I thought that was a really well designed scene where there's not a whole lot of dialogue and then you get, , Yost and, , Boone having a conversation. Boone's kind of pissed off the way that he entered the room. He's glad he is joining him, but he is like, you are undermining my authority, which Yost does a kind of a few times.
Mm-hmm. Which I think that they do that on purpose. I don't think it's like just an accidental thing. As a kid, I was just like, what are you, why are you so upset? And now as a, as an adult, I'd be like, that would piss me off. Mm-hmm. If I, if it was my team, but somebody else just contradicted you like that and your team and your assistant nonetheless, right?
Yeah. So he does that a couple of times, but they finally get everything in order and they're getting ready to go to camp. And where are they going to camp? Andrew Gettysburg College. Did that happen? They actually took a trip to Gettysburg. Yes. They didn't have their camp there. They didn't stay at Gettysburg College.
They didn't, , run through the forest and, , we'll get to that in a second, but , they did take a trip there. So they're, that is a real thing. They're doing their entire fall camp at Gettysburg College, which. Yeah. Come on. I know the trip is fine. Like, , it's really not that far though.
From where they live. It's not, it's like an hour and 20 minutes away. It's not But , you're not going to send your entire high school, your, camp out to Gettysburg College? No. You're gonna have your camp there in Alexandria. Yeah, it's a little bit, you can't afford that. Like, that's 'cause they were staying up at the college, in the dorms.
Dorms and for like, what, three weeks? Yeah. It was like, it seemed for like forever. Yeah. Like it's a quarter of the movie is the camp. But , , Herman Boone really sets the tone right. , He set the tone from when he walked into , the gymnasium. But at the beginning, , of camp, before they get in that bus, he has interactions with, , Gary, , er and Ray.
'cause Gary comes up to him. What does he say to him? , , We got our people on defense. We don't need none of your people. Something like that. We're all set. And he's like, oh my people. And then he's like, Hey, everybody. He's , what? What's your name again? Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. Is that what it was?
And he was like, no, it's Gary. No, I could have sworn you said it was Jerry, Jerry Lewis, and you must be Dean Martin and you must be Dean Martin. , Y'all got all the jokes here. , And he's like, Hey everyone, we got Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin here. Why don't we give 'em a round of applause? And he starts clapping and like everyone's, no, and, and the tension's there because like, you still have to segregate.
Yeah. And , he's like, Jerry, , where are your parents, Jerry? And he points at him. He is like, oh, look at them. They look to be so proud of you. It's his, it's his mom. It's his mom. He is just like, he's waving. He is like, hello Ms. Lewis. Or I don't even know if he's a Gier at that point, but he, he's embarrassing the shit outta him.
Then he pulls him close and he pretty much gets him to say, he, he ask him like, who's your daddy? Who's your fucking daddy? And , he gets Gary er to say, you're my daddy. You're my daddy. That's right, coach. Now get your ass on the bus because , he says, you have your brothers on the football team and you have your daddy.
You know who your daddy is, don't you? And like, oh yeah, what a badass. Yeah. And he's like, Dean, fix that tie son. Yep. Yeah. And he makes everyone get in the bus. He's like, oh, also you gotta mingle on that bus. You sit. Yeah. He pulls, everybody get black and white. He pulls everybody off the bus and puts them all together.
, Basically mix them up. Yeah. Yeah. And, , c Cho chocolate meal, which didn't actually happen. No, it didn't. We might as well go through as we go through and just say, what didn't happen didn't happen. Yeah. , But yeah, they go up to Gettysburg College and they have themselves a fall camp. And, you see right away how big of a hard ass Herman Boone is.
Like he is in your face. He's gonna tear you down to build you up. He's an old school motherfucker. , But , that shit actually works though. That's especially in football about that. Exactly. I mean, Nick, there's such an aggressive sport. Nick, Nick Saban made a career out of it. Like Yeah. He, he made the dolphins left tackle cry one time.
Yeah, I believe it. Wait, really? Yeah. There's a video of Nick Saban right before he left the Dolphins. He yelled at , a big ass 300 pound left tackle so much that he cried and left practice. Damn. A grown man in the NFL. Yeah. Grown man in the NFL. , But yeah, we, uh, this is where we first, , get into, , intermingling , within the camp.
I remember one of the first scenes, they're up, , in their dorm rooms or whatever, and Julius and, Gary are rooming together and Julius puts up a poster of the Olympics. Was it 1968, with the fists and the Black Power salute. And Gary's , oh man, I don't wanna look at that for three weeks.
And Julius is like, you don't have to, you don't have to look at all. He's like, take that down. And they get into a fucking fight there. Yep. So right away playing into some other racial tensions. Mm-hmm. They're running plays outside. I think Boone, you know, talks about you drop a pass, you run a mile, you fumble, you run a mile, you run the wrong play, you run a mile and like you can see how grueling it is, like he's not fucking around and he says John hind brown parts, like multiple times in this movie, by the way.
Yeah. What does that mean? Do you know? Kyle's gonna ask you. It's like ass, is it just like old school for ass? What does he say again? It's John hind brown parts. Literally what it's, I'm gonna break my foot off in your John hind brown parts. Interesting. I'm sure that just means I'm gonna break my foot off in your asshole in your ass.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I don't know like what comes, it's a creative comes from though a euphemistic way of saying, I'm gonna put a boot in your ass. You motherfucker. , Yeah, motherfucker. Yeah. , Since that's motherfucker, , that's what Herman Boone says all the time. He drops the f bomb a lot.
Yeah. Actually I don't think he, I don't think I heard him curse at all. I mean, it's a PG movie, but I don't think he cursed, like at all. No, I don't think that, I think there was barely any cursing at all in this movie. No. , I think someone says ass a couple of times, but again, I wanna see the radar cut.
We have to bring it to the families, bring it to the family store. Watch. Do you think that they were gonna do, , if, , they were gonna do a Ray at r version with R Ermi play? Uh, bill Yo's character Harley Iby. That's hilarious. Damn. , But moving on, you know, , there, there are more tensions.
Obviously we're gonna get to a boiling point or a, a good breaking point here. But Julius and Gary are still going at it after practice. 'cause these are like two bookend defensive ends, defensive linemen. , So like Gary and Gary is Gary's team captain. Yeah. He, he fashions himself as a captain. , He's a hard nose leader.
He's very vocal and white and very white and Gary White. He, and he does say he's the only all American on the team. Which he was an Allstate player, literally, like, and that, , that's not made up. He was a, yeah, he had offers from Notre Dame, Alabama at the time. Yeah. So, but there was another moment with him and Julius, like, after practice where.
, He was like, man, , I, why aren't you? Why aren't you trying hard? Why aren't you tackling harder and shedding your blocks? Y yada yada, yada. And Julius was like, why are you only getting after us black people? Why don't you get after , your white boys too? And he is like, I'm getting after everyone.
And I, I don't remember what it boils down to. I was like, Juli Julius is like, I'm just gonna do what I, what I'm gonna do. And, and Julius calls him out and says, you know that Dean, your best friend is not blocked for Rev once Once mm-hmm. All this camp. Yep. Yeah. And , I think that, , what's his name? .
Gary's like, man, you got a bad attitude. And he is like, well, attitude reflects leadership. Reflects leadership. And that's when Gary was like, fuck, you got me there, man. That's the, that's my favorite line from this movie. Yeah. It's a good line. It's a good line to remember. Very good, but very good things start to, to build properly.
'cause then, , they got moments where they're dancing and singing in the shower. This is where, Ethan, Latik or whatever starts singing, ain't No Mountain High enough with mm-hmm. Some of the guys in the locker room. He's singing some of that, , Motown Soul song, soul Music with them. And , they're like, oh shit, you can sing, dude.
Like, holy shit. , You're one of us. You're not, but you are like, you, , we can relate on, on that level. And they love that. They eat it up. , And you can tell does, does the com camaraderie is, is getting stronger. It's, it's, it's building. Mm-hmm. Uh, it's palpable. It is. And I, I think the one scene that really gets us going is the, your, one of your favorite lines, Jace.
, I'm pretty sure it's like they're like night practice. Like they're not getting shit in. Yeah. They're not doing it. Correct. , Don't think they go to Gettysburg first before that happens. They go on there. Oh, well let's talk about that then. Yeah. I mean, we mentioned it earlier, but we'll briefly, we'll keep it brief.
, The tension to your point, Andrew, is just. They're just, they're not getting along. Boone's trying to get them to write an essay on each of their teammates, or they're gonna do three day practices. That's right. He says get to know something about, you know, your roommates or your mm-hmm. And they're all trying, , Louie Las is the only one that's being successful at camp.
, Him and Rev are becoming friends. That's, then they go on a, they wake up at three in the morning and go on a run. I don't know how long this run was, but it from 3:00 AM Oh, yes. So they, yeah. They start at 3:00 AM in the morning and it's dawn and it's like, I, when they start running too, they like, pretty much just like, get outta bed.
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go. I was watching it. I'm pretty sure they like, had them running barefoot, or at least that was like their intention. And I'm like, I don't know how far away like the actual battlefield is, but it's gotta be at least a couple miles. They were running through mud and shit. Yeah.
Like, it was brutal. Weren't even trails. The whole point of this was to like, which is one of the most poignant , and relative , points of the movie, which is they get to the, they get to a stopping point and Denzel's looking over a, like a little like cemetery meadow. Yeah. Cemetery in a meadow.
And it's just, the sun's kind of on it. And there's this, a lot of fog. He's , you know what, anybody know where we are? And everybody's , and he's , we're at Gettysburg. , This is where, , 50,000 men died. Yeah. Died. And 50,000 men. Let that sink in. That's, that's more. People than most major league baseball stadiums can hold.
Like that's a, that's a, it's a whole town of people. It's a whole town. It's a whole, it's my, my hometown. Yeah. Yeah. That's like it. So like, and he was like, this is where, , I fought my brother with, I killed my brother with malice in my heart. , This is what tore us up before. And it can, like, it is pretty much him saying like, you, you can let this be destructive or we can use this to grow and see what we could really be.
, And that's, that was always such a cool part I thought was like, what a cool way to, to kind of drive that point home, which is the essence of the movie. And now it's that point is like, are we gonna, are we going to succeed or are we gonna become this? And I think like subconsciously just watching that, you're like, oh man, that's pretty heavy.
That's pretty, but it's well done. So I was, I always liked that, that little It's well lit too, because it's that dawn and they have the little fog and it's picturesque. Yeah. It's meant to be that way, which is filmed in Rome, Georgia. All of really, almost all of this movie was filmed in Georgia.
Georgia, Rome. Interesting. A lot. Marietta High School. Marietta some, yeah. , Midtown High School. Yeah. , It was great. It was Grady at the time. I think, , some of those championship or playoff games were filmed at, at the time. Grady. Yeah. In Midtown. And, , Druitt Hills High School was another one too.
Right. Yeah, they, yeah, I don't think so. I don't think so. I don't remember that part. Okay, that's fine. You don't have to think anything, Kyle. , But getting to your point, Andrew, , so we get to the, the nighttime practice of after the run. Yeah. And this is where basically Bertie gets on his best friend for not blocking, right?
Yeah. And he, he starts yelling at him and getting in his face. And you can see the coaches, they don't stop anything. They're like, they like what they're seeing. Mm-hmm. And Boone looks over at Yost and he like, gives him a nod, like, this is what we are trying to get to. And then Julius blows up this horrible zone replay that they're trying to run.
Destroys it. Destroys it. , Crushes, pd, , who's been yelled at the whole time. I think we need to also mention that Boone has been extra hard on pd. He keeps fumbling and he keeps, like, walking away every time Boone yells at him. Might be a common theme going forward
, , he's just a player that doesn't respond very well to hard coaching. , He's a little bitch. He kinda, he's kinda soft. He kinda is. He a little softy and so he's so prima donna, so he gets blown up by Julius on this, like bad re but to be fair though, , rev probably should have kept the ball.
, And Julius is giving Petey shit. And so Bertie comes over and he's giving Petey shit and then they do , the strong side, weak side. Strong side. Weak side, yeah. And then they left strong side, left side. , Yeah, strong side. Left side. Is it? Left side? Okay. Well it is strong side, weak side in terms of like actual, I knew what you actual opposites, , but they, , yeah, they , and then they go nuts together and then all of a sudden it cuts and now they're all in the football field during day and they're singing Spillt wine.
Yep. , And this is where Sunshine comes in, right? Like , the team, they're showing you the team. They're bonding now. Bertie and Julius are, they're friends now. Yeah. They're like, they're most of , the team seems to be pretty amicable. Like they, they like each other. There's a few outcasts.
Like Ray Ray's gonna be a problem. Dick Ray's a little fuck him. He's such a prick. Yeah. Yeah. And so they, , they're there, they're sell, they're dancing and singing together and getting ready for practice. And then, , who shows up? Andrew Long-haired surfer, hippie boy from California. , He's from a military family.
, They had kind of lived Is that like a colonel? Is that Yeah, yeah. Something like that. Yeah. , But , they show up and, , it's Ronnie Bass is his name, and he is like, you got a spot for my son. He's a good quarterback. And Herman's like, well, we got ourselves a good quarterback, rev. , You can try to go take him down the road to another school and they may, could use his services.
And, , Bertie called him a fruitcake. Yeah, because he looked, , he's got long blonde hair. He, he looked like a fruitcake. Let's be real. He did. . Kidding. But, at that point, , Bert here is walking away. He's probably at least like 50 yards away from him, maybe more. And, , sunshine or Ronnie Bass, , takes a ball and throws it and hits him in the back of the head from, , 50 plus yards away.
And, but then no hip action too. It was all Army. It was all Army. He just flicks it and it spirals and waxs 'em point blank in the back of the head.
'. And honestly, Boone Yost were impressed with his form when they're like, okay, well we can find a spot for your boy. We can find a spot for your boy. Uh, one condition, what was that condition? Had to cut his hair. That's right. That's right. And he cuts it almost immediately. , We fast forward to the shower scene.
His hair is cut. , People are dancing and singing around, and then what is, they're calling him Sunshine. Sunshine 'cause of his hair. And he is like, all right, I can dig that. And they're like, you don't have any problems with it. He is like, no, I like it. Call me what you want. I'm sunshine. And then he goes and makes out what Bertie, he goes and like, gets bertie's attention.
, He needed to gain control. He needed to alpha the situation. So he was like, yeah, bet he smacked him. He kissed him right , on the lips, pulled him in close. And Bertie was like, man, what the, and they then another fight breaks out. Yeah. , But everyone's laughing at Bertie when he is like, you kissed me.
Wow. And then , they're at the, the lunch table, , and Pete's like, man, you're, you're not, you're not, you know. You're not that are you? What do you mean, Pete? What, what do you mean Pete? He's like, you know, like, I don't judge, but like, you're, you're, you're not, you're not. If you don't judge, why does it matter?
And he's like, he starts fucking with Pete too. Yeah. And Pete starts screaming. Mm-hmm. And then, , and this kind of wraps up camp. That's pretty much camp. Yeah. Camp wraps up in the show. That's the high notes. And they're singing, , what are they singing when they come back? They're singing, they're all singing on the buses.
They're coming back as their parents are picking them up from camp. , Are they singing? Ain't No Mountain High enough. I feel like I hear that song like three times. No n that's right. Nah, nah. Yeah. Hey, hey, hey. And then like, they show up and then one of the, the Ryan Gosling's character Allen, his dad, , he's like, it looks like they've been brainwashed and they all get off the bus and they're like hugging each other and going and seeing their parents.
And then, you know, this is a chance where we see Yost, he introduces his daughter to the Boone family and they have a daughter named Nikki who they insult each other.
So. Yeah, we're right. So it was a good why that so weird. So it gets us right back to where we started. And the first day of school and it is a madhouse. It is. This is the first day of integrated school, so people are, , picketing and, protesting and there's cameras everywhere and , it's not a riot, but like, it's, it, like you said, chase, it's a madhouse.
It's just like people are getting ready to riot. Yeah. And , here comes this team that's unified and have three weeks or four weeks together of, , camaraderie , and other things. And they walked back into , this hellfire racial, , craziness. , I remember is this when, , Gary Intres introduced, , Julius to his girlfriend Emma?
He did, yeah. Yeah. , And Emma would not shake Julius's hand and she like scoffs at Gary and walks away like, you're changing. , And then you hear Julius say like, looks like we're not in Kansas anymore. Yeah. Which is just the popular movie line of all time where it's just gotta be put in every movie we ever hear.
But anyway, any, anytime a situation changes, we're gonna hear that quote till the end of time. They end up in school and then it just cuts to Boone and he's on the football field. He's like, this is my sanctuary. This is, this is my house.
So we get that moment. We're getting ready for the first game, right, Andrew? Yeah. , They, , I don't know who they play it, I don't think it really matters, but , they beat the shit out of the first team. They play, don't they? They question, they, they, they, it's like 44 to 10 or something. Yeah, something like that.
, So like right off the bat, you know, , we learned that this team's pretty fucking good. Yeah. It's really good. And, you know, to dip back into reality, if you combine three high schools together in one smaller area, chances are your high school football team's gonna be pretty good and it's gonna have significant advantage over the rest of the schools.
But, , especially from a funding standpoint where they can send the whole team to Gettysburg Train for a off season. Right. , But we skipped so many games too, so it doesn't matter yet. Yeah, there's one game where the, a lot of the struggle here is Berte and his friends want the segregation to happen is his girlfriend and Dean joins them.
Or Ray, I think there are three things that we should touch upon, , that happen on the field. . The emergence of Petey, , being switched to defense and Yost kind of crossing, did that happen the first game that wa it was like the second or third game, I think. Yeah, I think it was. And then of course, Ray, , not blocking and of, and Alan, , getting benched in favor of Petey and his dad fucking going crazy.
So everybody out here listening, everyone that loves Ryan Gosling's good looks and would just like fawn over him. He's such a dork in this. Don't ever, draft him to play on your fantasy team. Don't put him as a cornerback. He can't cover anything like it's single man coverage. Ryan, you have to jam someone at the line.
You can't just let him run past you. He gets beat deep like every single time he slow his shit. Shit. Yeah, he doesn't know leverage. , He couldn't even leverage the run very well. He just got blocked. Like he was bad. Yeah. , So we, we got that outta the way. And so Yost at one point, you know, ghost to Pete is like, you're, you're going in, you're taking his place.
Well because he, he got, he fits the wrong run gap on, , on offense and, coach Boone comes over to him. He is like, you didn't even have the football to fumble this time and yells at him. And then Petey just does what he always does. He sulks takes his helmet, all walks, walks way to like the, the crowd.
He goes up to like the bleachers, like right at like the edge, not even really paying attention to the game. He also goes up, he's like, I want you in. And he's like, what? He's like, yeah, you're going in for Allen. And he goes in and what does he do? He breaks up a pass immediately. Yeah. It's like, okay. He gets a fumble recovery and Yep.
, He can play corner. He finds that guy out. Yeah. He like, he fucking levels him, him out. , But , Boone, obviously liked the result, but he didn't like that yo had crossed him because if you remember Boon's, the head coach, Yos is just a defensive coordinator. Don't forget those Dynamics.
Dynamics. And, , one thing that you know, I find interesting in this movie is Yost and Boone like have some, like terse words for each other multiple times. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. But it's never like anything that bubbles, you're overcooking my grits coach. Yeah. They stay amicable the entire time. Yes.
The entire time. And there's, even though they disagree with each other, fundamentally it seems that some things, they don't lash out and they're very like, they're cordial, they're professional. And Boone is just all about winning. Yes. He's all about being perfect and winning. And Yost is like, is that really all you care about is winning man?
You don't care about the, not the in between. He is like, I care about it all, but I care about winning the most. Yeah. I'm a winner. Yeah. , , there's one point where Yost is like. , You don't have to thank me about pd. And he is like, you undermine my authority again. Yeah. And , he's like, yeah, but you don't have to come down on these kids like that.
And he's like, which kids you talking about? I yell at the white ones. You don't say any word. Yeah. He actually has a good line. He says, I'm a mean cuss, but I'm the same mean cuss to everybody else out there. Yeah. , Life is not gonna give these kids any breaks.
Especially the young black ones. Yeah. And that was like a very good line. Incredibly. Yeah. , 'Cause you know, yos kind of wanted to play that good cop to boone's bad cop. And Boone's like, no, that's not his dick. He's not, he's not gonna get any breaks. Yeah. You think these white people out here are gonna give him breaks?
Like, and let him just like sulk? No, he's gonna have to learn to be tough. So it was a, so as a kid you were like, why is he being so mean to Pete? Poor Pete. And now as an adult, I'm like, yeah, fuck Pete. Yeah. He deserved all of that and more. He was definitely not understanding the assignment. And it's not about you, it's about the team.
You gotta show up and like, you can't just like fucking walk away. When your coach is talking to you. Yeah. Like, then you get to play. Yeah. I mean, the life lesson, like anytime things get hard, you can't just walk away. Mm-hmm. Um, uh, a few more things that we should touch upon. Obviously the team keeps winning.
, There was one night when Sunshine and Rev and PD go with us like some bar and they're, they're celebrating their first win. And, , first or second win, it's towards the beginning. And Bertie at the beginning of this too, like, we, I wanna add this on. Bertie and his girlfriend are still str she doesn't want to, she hates the fact that he's hanging out with hang out with black people.
Yeah. And Ray is joining her. So you see Ray in the car trying to drive everybody away, and they're like, come on Gary, let's go up to the the Hill. Everyone's gonna be there , I'm going to the bird. Yeah, exactly. And his mom blocks him from going to the bird with Julius.
But yeah, back to your point, Andrew, they're all like, celebrating and Sunshine tries to do what? Well, he's like, come on, let's go get something to eat. , We can go into any of these bars and PD and Rev. Were like, man, no. You can't not, not here. And he was like, what are you talking about? , They'll seat us.
Come on, come on, I'll show you. And they're like, okay, he's, ill pay, I'll pay. Yeah. He's like, and they're like, okay. So they walk in and they go into some like smoky restaurant diner type place. And , the proprietor, the owner is like, we got a full house here tonight, boys. It was like five people in the dining.
There's like 10 open tables and sunshine's like, what do you mean, man, that there's an open table right there. He is like, I can serve whoever I want to and I can reject whoever I want to. It's my restaurant. And, and he's like, yeah, that means you too hippie boy. Yeah. And he is like, get out. And so they leave and Rev and PD are like taken aback.
, They knew it was gonna happen, , getting sent out because you're a black man in a restaurant is probably pretty alarming. It's, you know, and they yell at, , sunshine. Yeah. They were like, we tried to tell you why did you go on? And then it kind of like spoils the night for everybody. It does, but then it quickly moves on to the next scene, which I don't remember what it was.
Mm-hmm. But, , they keep winning. They keep winning. Uh, I think this is where we gotta talk about Ray. Yeah. Ray Ray who did, it's like the third or fourth game of the season. Ray didn't block for Rev during all the fall camp. , Or he was off and on and he, , lets rev get hurt.
'cause he lets his block through. And this is the. Probably , their biggest test of the season so far. I don't remember the, you had mentioned the name Marshall or, so it wasn't Marshall's, the championship game. It was the other one. , Grover 10. Grover 10, or Groveton or whatever it is. They have a massive defensive, like tackle, huge defensive lineman.
And he just lets him through the line and he sacks rev and breaks his wrist. This is, this puts Rev out for the rest of the season, essentially. Yeah. , And you know that's when Sunshine gets in and becomes the starter. But, , Gary knows that, , Ray did that on purpose. He saw it. Yeah, he saw it. , He knew exactly what he did and he come, he pulls, , coach Boone aside at the end and he is like, Hey, I wanna talk to you man to man.
He is like, sure, what's up? , He's like, I wanna kick Ray off the team. And Boone's like, you know my rule man. , Which I don't know what was his role? What did he mean by it? He doesn't, he doesn't cut a player. That's right. , He doesn't cut a player. And he was like, yeah, well this needs to happen, Ray lets that dude through.
He was responsible for ref breaking his race and Sunshine had a hell of a game that game He did. He and came back and , he was the star. Looked like Steve Young or something out there. And, and Boone gave him that motivational speech where he was like, I had 12 brothers and sisters and my, both my parents died same week, but my brothers and sisters looked up to me even though I was the youngest and I wasn't ready.
But, and then they all leave and the offensive line coach is like, did you have 12? He's like, nah, it was eight. He is like, all right, 12 sounded better. , But he, he stops Ray after they're all about to leave the locker room. He is like, Hey, , I know what you did out there. , You didn't block for Rev.
Mm-hmm. He's like, Ray, you're off the team. And, and Ray's like, man, what, what? Blah, blah. He gives him the, you know, the puffy chest pouty, you know, what do you mean man? He is like, you're off the team, you're gone. And, and I was like, Ray, you should be off the team. You're about like 30 years old. , And you're also like five, you're like a five foot nine.
Right. Tackle fuck off dude. You don't need to be playing , on the offensive line at that size. Yeah. Like all these big dudes. And you were the one that they chose at Right. Tackle. Yeah. Get Fucked Ray. , But he kicks Ray off the team. . And I think this is about the time when, , Yost finds out he's gonna be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
, They have little banquets and he's one of like three finalists. And this is where we get the coach that called Boone a that right. A monkey. So like , it was that game. Yeah. But he's told by like the head of the Hall of Fame, he is like, man, , , , if you help , lose this game, you're a s shoe in.
And the reason they wanted to lose the game was because they were looking for any reason to fire Coach Boone if he slipped up once he was gone and they were gonna give it back to Yost. But Yost being the good man that he is, , and , they were in playoff mode too. They were like, so the loss mattered.
Yeah. , They made an adjustment in this game. I don't remember what it was, but Yos defense essentially won the game. I'm pretty sure. Or, well, but he also, go ahead. Remember , he had that conversation with the refs though. He pulled one of the refs aside. That's right. They were throwing the game.
They were, that's what it was. He was like, I know what you're doing and like you, if you're gonna throw this game, I will make sure that the press hears about it and I don't care if I go down with him. You're come with me. And , he was like, they essentially did, the ref was like, bet cool. No, , I dunno what you're talking about.
So then they adjusted their play style. . Say what? Catch him off guard. I don't know. I don't know what the, what the, I, it didn't make any sense to me. It didn't because why? The ref would just listen to him and just not throw it anymore, but they just stopped throwing it. The ref just started calling and because they were calling, holding penalties and ticky tack shit on every single play to the point where it was creating , a lopsided, there's advantage from the other team.
There's this one scene I did have an issue with just 'cause of the choppiness and it just kind of. Was, it didn't make any sense logically. And then there's a scene over there where Bertie goes over and just points at the fucking coach. He points at the racist coach. He's like, and it's just like the most intense point.
It's like Terminator and that, that's something you get a flag for. Yeah. You get no sportsman. Like, you know, and the ref was like, oh shit. That 18-year-old means business. Yeah. He's gonna kill me and my family better, better watch out. Real., It was really funny.
I like audibly laughed. , Yeah., I thought it was kind of awkward. Yeah. I don't think it needed to be there. But they ended up murdering that team. They were, yeah. They flipped the script in the second half and they beat the shit out of 'em. , It wasn't like 44 to 10, but it was something like that.
And you saw Yos. Yos becomes Boone for a second. He's like, I don't want them to get another yard. , If they cross the line of scrimmage, I'll pull all your asses out. Yep. Don't let them complete a pass, I think is what he said. Yeah. Don't let them gain a yard. Yeah. Which is pretty, , pretty high standard to set, but hey, if it works, go for it.
It works. Yeah. But they win. The Hall of Fame board guy comes to Yost afterwards, like, well, you missed it by a few votes. That was it. It was like, okay, go fuck yourself. They were, they basically told him like, you just cost yourself the Hall of Fame. That's what it was. Yeah. , And then. Herman goes to shake the racist coach's hand.
He refuses and he says, oh, coach, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a banana and to it, to him , it was great. Yeah. He gets, and then he kinda looks at him. He is like, respect. Yeah. Like walked away. I like the troll, man. Good job. Yeah. The, , and then we're getting on to, . The championship game, right.
They just, they, they're not gonna go to the championship game. But Bert here, they're all celebrating. Yeah. They had just won like the regional or whatever. , And everyone , is super excited because it's, they're one more, one more game away from a state title and the town's lit up, you know, uh, I think in the previous scene, like.
Boone's getting home. And daughter's like, I got your projector out on the counter. He is like, no, we're not working tonight. We're celebrating. He walks in, but he starts hearing people cheering. He walks out to his front porch, just neighbors. People at the white and black. White and black are all just, cheering and, congratulating.
'cause the entire town's super happy. You know? , When teams win, , when, , success is had in sports, it brings everyone together. And this is exactly what's happening when sports goes. Good people. Happy. Happy. Exactly. Kyle Sport, go good. It's true though. It is. But then we fast forward to like the town center.
, Gary's driving along and his, I don't, well, he had a nice car, Kyle, did you, did you catch what kind of car that was? I don't remember. It was some convertible it Camaro. Was it a Camaro? Yeah. , He even says Camaro too. He does, you're right. It's a, that was a, the last good one. They actually, that was the first bad one they made, or No, the first good one they made.
That was a good one. There you go. First good Camaro that was ever made. , And Gary Bertie is driving it, but , he's going through town. He is waving at everyone. He, uh, I don't know who he sees, but it's like an old friend. No, it's just everybody out being like Gary. But there was, there was one dude in particular who was like, yeah, man, let's go.
And he, he starts revving up his engine. He's looking back and he just goes forward and gets absolutely T-boned, T-boned by like a pickup truck at the next intersection. So let's just say this, Gary er did have a car accident in real life that. Did paralyze him, but
it wa it was actually a few years after. , In real life, he actually played, , he didn't miss the state championship. Yeah. He played in the state championship and so he, he did get paralyzed by a car accident, but it was just well after the fact.
And then he had a second car accident that killed him, which is very sad, like horrible. Mm-hmm. Horrible way to go. But, , it was actually after the conclusion of the 1971 season is when he had that, so it wasn't Okay. So he did have it in high school, but it was after the season. It wasn't, yeah, it wasn't during the season, so they embellished it.
It wasn't really like standing ovation for his mom when she got into the stadium. Yeah. There was none of that. No. Yeah. , But there is , a real point in this movie, again, a lot of this is fictionalized, like Yes, the city existed. Yes. The town was integrated , and whatnot. It's just like told from a different, the timeline just really sped up.
There's actually one line in here that's real, and it's coming up at the hospital scene where Julius shows up to meet his mom. And Julius is crying and she's like, tears won't make my boy walk again. That was actually said by Bertie's mom to Julius. Oh, wow. Yeah. In real life. That's strong. Yeah. So, mm-hmm.
This was a part that I thought , was cheesy when, , Julius walks in, Bertie puts up his fist. Like, I don't know if that was supposed to be like the black power fist or whatever, but that's what I thought.
I was like, eh, seemed a little odd to me. I was like, maybe don't do that. You know? Yeah. I dunno if it was the black, I don't know if it was the black power. I think it was just like solidarity kind of thing. Maybe. Uh, well, and, and well, they connected it earlier. To the Olympics also, he keeps calling him Superman. We should make that. 'cause he is like, at the beginning when he put the poster up, he was like, well you better use your X-ray vision and look behind at Superman 'cause it ain't coming down. And so he, and he ended up calling him Superman.
The rest of the way is a nickname. , Which I find funny. But anyway, Bertie's not gonna be there. He's paralyzed. , And so they have to go win the championship for him. And they're going up against Ed Henry and they talk about Ed Henry multiple times in this movie about being just an incredible coach.
Was he an incredible coach? I don't know. , . This is Marshall. Yeah, this is a state championship game. And , they get to the game. And, you know, the team's a little frazzled without Bertie, but Ed Henry, he has a surprise for him. Andrew, what's the surprise?
What is the surprise? He goes completely shotgun formation. That's right. Yeah. He is going like west coast offense. Yeah. They're kind of airing it out too. Yeah. They're kind of airing it out. And no wishbone, no triple option.
Allen's getting his ass beat. Yeah. , Pete comes up before the state championship, by the way, says that Coach, I wanna play for you again. 'cause he walked off on Yost one night. Yeah. And yo was like, all right, you're done for the year. Yeah, you're done. , But that's where the whole thing with him comes from is like, , why are you doing this?
I know you're young, but like soft. You all been through so much. , And that's what, and that's what he learned from Boone is he's like, okay, I get what Boone's talking about. , And we briefly glossed over that, but Pete basically quits on him again. So Yost is like, okay, you're done. And he puts Alan in and then now Alan's starting again.
Pete comes up and goes, I wanna play for you. And he is like, well, you can play for me next year, but tonight I need to see you be a better teammate. , So treating him the way you should. So Pete's on the bench and we put Ryan Gosling back in. Find out he's, there he is, is a liability. Can't cover anything.
All just god awful. Ryan, I hope you're listening to this podcast 'cause you were a god awful cornerback. Just absolutely a great driver. Terrible cornerback. Great driver. , Yeah. And basically caught them off guard. Yeah. And it worked, , they put PD back in that speed kind of negated. Some of even they didn't even like, , Alan's like, Hey, I didn't ride the bench to watch us lose the state championship.
Yeah. 'cause Allen's like, Pete's better than me. He needs to go in. And he is like, well, you tell him, you go, you, it's your spot. You go give it to him. And he did. And Pete like freaked out, gave him a hug, and the rest was history. , Seven, nothing at halftime. And coach Boone is like changing his ways a little bit.
He's like, look, no matter how this game finishes out, we're in dog fight, but we're gonna walk out with our heads held high. And they're like, no, coach, you taught us that we gotta be perfect and we gotta win and all this other stuff. , And then, , bill Yost is like, can you help me out on defense Ed? Ed Henry's kicking my ass.
Yeah. He pretty much becomes a little cock for a second. He is like, I'll give you the coaching responsibilities Mr. Boone. Show me how it's done, daddy. And then Coach Boone, all he does is put his quarterback in at Corner. Yeah. Yeah. Rev runs it. Sunshine. What was the sunshine? Yeah. 'cause he told, he's like, sunshine, you're gonna be playing both ways tonight.
And he puts him at corner and he just moves people. But Revs in there too. He puts Rev in at the, the Final four major Charact because the Ed Henry was like. I thought he had a broken wrist. No, that was the, the final play of the game that Rev scored on. The final play of the game. That's what it was.
Reverse. Yeah. Well, we just ruined it for you guys. The spoiler alert, but the rev scores, the final touchdown. , Yeah, , they switch things up. They get a field goal, I think So make it seven three, correct. Yeah. , And then Marshall has the ball with just like a minute and a half left. , Who forces the fumble?
There's a fumble in there. Was it Pete? Was it I think it, no, it wasn't Petey. I think it was one of the white boys, I think. No, I that it was Julius. , I think it was Julius. Yeah. He catches him from behind. Pops it out. Yeah. Which the slowest, like that guy that was running. Oh God. He was like the punter.
Yeah, it looked like a Scooby do run. Like it was just like dude and Julia's running after him. And Julius is a big dude. Yeah, big fast dude. , But, , , , he runs after him and he catches up with him. And pops it free. Gets the fumble. So they get a turnover and then they go one place, 75 yards. , There was some bad clock management here.
Mm-hmm. , Herman, , Boone lets the clock it down to 14 seconds or 17 seconds after they recovered with like a minute and 20 to go. Yeah. I was like, dude, call a timeout. Like, what are you doing? Yeah. Which whatcha doing? Which is weird because the clock should stop anyway after It should. It should. So it was bad time management on both sides.
But anyway, they score one play on a reverse, on a reverse to their quarterback with a broken wrist. I thought it was kind of anti-climatic. Very man. Anti-climactic. Excuse me. I, , you know, for all the buildup, , you could have made this little bit more dramatic. Could, it should have been a, it should have been a goal line stand.
I think they should have came back, taken the lead and then had a goal line stand with Julius Julius. Yeah. Yeah. Getting the stuff at the goal line. Yeah. Kind of like little giants. Yeah. Little Giants had a better ending to, , their football game. It was more dramatic. Yeah. , You know, the music swelled properly, like in this one, it just kind of happened so fast.
It just happened. And then we get your favorite part. I mean, you knew the thing is like. You knew it was gonna happen. Like the buildup of everything. You knew that they weren't gonna just fall flat. There was just no way. Yeah. , So , it is a bit predictable like that. But like, it, it's, but yeah, you know, it's not a bad way.
It's so good. , They're, , they're celebrating, , people are crying, people are dancing. You know, Yost and Boone have that moment. And, , midfield Hall of Famer in my book, well, he says, well coach, you were the right man for the job. And , he grabs and he is like, you're a hall of Famer in my book coach.
And they both raise their hand and that's when like, the music does swell and like, you know, the emotions kick in and, , it's pure, uh, pure bliss. The Titans have won state championship and that's where the movie, , goes to black. And then we, we open up to, uh, a funeral. Funeral. 'cause Gary Bertie has died 10 years later in the second car accident.
In the second car accident, which they don't really say that. They just say he's passed away and everyone's at his funeral., And we got a grownup, Cheryl doing the voiceover, which that's how the name of this movie came about. Really? Yeah. 'cause , the guy that wrote it did not know. He was like, should I call it all for one?
And he was like, struggling with the name of the movie. And then , he wrote her saying, remember the Titans? , Sometimes if you just listen hard enough, you'll get what you need. And so he. I listen to her say that and called the movie, remember The Titans? And that was that.
And that's pretty much the movie folks. Yeah. There's a lot more, there's a lot of other parts that we didn't get into that were definitely worth watching that are , very fun and not a lot, but that's, that's the, big, big stuff. Yeah. And it's very linear movie. There's not a lot of it's just about are they gonna succeed or not and are they gonna overcome their environment there, which is a pretty realistic and like easy to relate to for I think a lot of people.
, do you want me to go through a list here of all the things that were not accurate just to Oh my God. Just to, because I have, I have a full list that I just hit some high points.
I do want hit that this football season, Kyle, I don't know if , this did not happen the way they said it did. This Titans team blew everyone out. The closest game was five points. Really? Yeah. Yeah. They believe everybody out. The next closest was 18 points. So they destroyed everyone. I mean, think about it, it's a conglomerate of three high schools into one.
They have so much, so many resources. They have so many students to pick from. Uh, you know, you, you have the larger student enrollment, you have the chances of a, a good football team are much higher. So they just dominated. They, I think they won the state championship 29 to nothing or something like that.
Yeah., But yeah. I'm just gonna go through, , a few things. Just a few things. , I think we talked about it, but the racial tension had been dispersed by the 1971. Schools had already been integrated seven, six years prior. So there was no integration. It was just a conglomeration. , All the other schools they played were integrated too.
Virginia as whole had integrated. So there were no full white teams. Meaning there was no racist coach that called Herman, you know? Well, there probably was some racist there. There might have been at least holding it back for sure. But it wasn't like white versus black like it was, all the teams were integrated.
Um, they didn't do the dance on the field. The, we are the titans. Mighty, mighty titans, you know that. Oh, shs. They didn't do that. That was one of the corny moments I wanted to leave out. It was, but like, I don't know that one. I remember that as a kid though. I remember that as a kid. That was big. That one in the, nah, nah.
Hey, hey, goodbye. Like those two are ones that like, I can Hey, hey. Yeah, I can recite those from memory thanks to this movie. My people are of the buffalo now, not, Hey. Hey. There you go, Kyle. , The racist restaurant scene where boys got kicked out did not happen. , Cheryl, , Yo's daughter was not as big into football.
, And she also had, , two other sisters. It was, yeah. And, and then Yos didn't like that that was portrayed that way 'cause he loved his daughters. All three of them. , Obviously no 3:00 AM in Gettysburg. , Banana incident did not happen. There was no referee scheme. The hall of, there was no Hall of Fame back in that timeline.
So that was all fictionalized, which they also wouldn't have an active coach in the Hall of Fame ceremony like that. Midseason, so I didn't buy that one bid. Anyway, that's what, yeah. Ronnie's Sunshine Bass was not a long-haired hippie, but he was from California. He also played at South Carolina.
He did, he was a successful college quarterback. Yeah. For the Gamecocks. , Yeah, I mean, obviously Brier wasn't paralyzed during the season. We know about that. But it was, it did happen shortly after the season, which sucks that it, because , he did have Notre Dame Alabama scholarships. He did. Which in the seventies, it was a big deal.
Yeah. That means you're. Top tier talent. , But yeah, that's kind of like a list of things that were fictionalized. But, , Boone and Yost, , went on to be lifelong friends after that. They actually died. Both died in 2019, , like four months apart from each other or something like that. How cute. , We talked about some of the embellishments, but like, I don't think it takes away from the movie, obviously a fictionalized movie's going to, , not stay true to the history that happened.
But it doesn't ruin, it doesn't take away from the microcosm that is that movie. Well, we, I mean, we also talked about it from a standpoint of the writer went in knowing he was gonna fictionalize it. 'cause , he produced the movie or pitched the movie as it was and no one went for it. So he. Mm. Obviously made a movie out of it.
So at this point, when the writer comes out and says, Hey, this is kind of inspired by true events, which is the difference, the same based on true events versus inspired by mm-hmm. , Obviously they're real people, but he made a movie out of it and it's a much better movie than probably the story in real life of a already integrated football team beating the dog shit out of everybody.
And another thing that I wanna touch upon there, there apparently wasn't much racial tension between the players at that point. It was all, it was mainly competitive. I'm sure there was some Well, and , the town looks at that as like a big step in that direction, that team.
Yeah. Mm-hmm. But , everything at that point, like everything you see in the town has already like been wiped. So , my dad likes this movie, but it, it pisses him off because my dad went to high school 15 minutes down the road from TC Williams. Mm-hmm. That's crazy.
And, , he grew up, well, not, didn't grow up, but in high school he lived in Springfield, Virginia. Yeah. , He went to Robert E. Lee High School. , No longer that, it's now John Lewis High School. Robert E. Lee High School. Yeah. Is it the South? You, we ask and because, you know, Robert E. Lee , is a proud Virginian, so, , but , they didn't like TC Williams.
They hated him because they were so much better and so much bigger than everyone around them. And it wasn't really a racial thing. It was just because they had an unfair advantage and they were dominant in everything they fucking did. So, , yeah. , Crazy how that works out, right? Yeah, I know. All that money, all those people.
So silly. Yeah. , Well that wraps up. Remember the Titans again? Kyle was right. We only, we hit the high points there. Who's calling you? , We hit the high points there, but there's so much to see with this movie. , Andrew, let's start with you. , How do you feel about watching this as an adult? , It's.
It's a great sports movie. You know, some of it's obviously a little whitewashed and a little cliched. , It doesn't go into the nitty gritty. You watch this movie to feel good. It's a feel good movie. It's a good microcosm of that time. , Again, a little whitewashed.
, It doesn't dive deep, but , it's a good easy watch. And I wouldn't say easy because it, it definitely rattles with , your emotions, , on a number of levels. They deliver some cutthroat lines in this movie. Yeah. That bring you into that reality real fast., It's not as, elementary as you would think.
It doesn't mess around with some of the lines and some of the situations. There are racial slurs., There are things that, you know, take you aback.
Yeah. The slurs they have for Boone. Yeah. I mean, you, they say that multiple times. Multiple times, yeah. . I'm trying to figure out how to best say this. Its poignancy does not fade away. , Watching it , in my thirties, , it may not have the same lasting effect, , on me as when I first watched it when I was eight or nine or whatever.
But like, , it still hits you and it still hits you in multiple areas and it does its job. , , I don't really have many critiques in that regard. Definitely a little cheesiness, but like, like I said, it's not that elementary. It really isn't. Kyle, what'd you think? , This is definitely one of the better movies that we've watched.
Even though all the stuff that we're talking about didn't, I mean, that didn't really actually happen like that. It didn't actually, you know, wasn't actually as maybe dynamic during the, , the actual telling of the story. We heard, however, it's written, well I go back to this. It's written well, has good, some autography, good acting, good directing. , It's, it tells, a story concisely. There's not a lot of like fluff or filler to get right to it. It knows, the movie knows what it is, even though that we're embellishing a lot, it's still like they know what kind of movie they're trying to make and they make it.
This is a, an empowering story. It's a feel good story, it's touching. , And it hits on like bigger societal, , it hits on bigger societal aspects that we all have kind of taken for granted. So putting yourself in that kinda world seems a little farfetched. But I do think that it does have , a lot of like pance today, , especially with how the world is now and how divisive everything is and how people can't literally just talk to each other or go to Thanksgiving and not have to worry about not talking to, , your uncle or your aunt or whoever.
, It's a good reminder that like , we can come together and do things if we just listen to each other and try to get to know people for who they are. And you can still build community. And I think that's something that, again, , I just think it's a good watch right now. , It's a feel good watch for right now.
, I think we all need a little feel good watch these days. And also I would say it's a good watch with, . Like children that can understand, I don't know what age that would be. Where you can, like, you start to understand what, , probably the age when we came out. 8, 9, 10. Yeah. When, yeah. 8, 9, 10.
Honestly, second. Third grade. That's a time for fourth grade. Yeah. , We caught this movie at the perfect time for , our development uhhuh. , It was just a very, again, entertaining, it's, I iconic, and I'm saying this 'cause like, again,, I don't like football. Like I'm not a football person. , I think it's tedious and boring, but I think , this movie is a very good bridging the gap to people that maybe don't like that kind of stuff.
And you don't have to be a football fan to like this movie. It's very relatable. There's a lot of fun moments in it. And the football is just a vehicle, you know? Yeah. , For the story that we're telling. Yeah. And , I do app I do appreciate that. And I, that's why, again, why like, I'm gonna, , it will get one of the higher scores for a quote unquote children's movie.
And it's not really, it's a family movie, but , , it's very good. And I do think that I, my memories of it served me correctly from when I was a kid. Yeah. I mean, I didn't wanna like, go into extreme detail to, show my hands, but obviously , this movie holds up like without a doubt. , What you were saying, Kyle, about how, .
This movie demonstrates community and loving your brother, , as a neighbor, , is perfect for this time. And, you know, it sounds cheesy and it sounds cliche to put differences aside and look for the, the common good in all. But , we could all use that. We could all mm-hmm. We could all abide by that.
And, just watching something that maybe doesn't necessarily, , rankle your intelligence so deeply that , you need to write a dissertation. That's not what this is about. But like, it hits home. It makes you feel something powerful and good and whole. , And I think that's something the world could use.
So this movie , hits even harder, honestly, as an adult. Yeah. In my opinion. You know, and I said to at the beginning that I was gonna kind, when I'm going into this movie, when I pre-washed it, I was like, okay, I don't think it's gonna be, it's a kid's movie at the end of the day. This is a kid's movie.
It's a family movie. , It's a family movie, it's Disney. So I was like, oh, it's not gonna be gritty enough to make me feel anything. Like now that , I'm older, I've seen a little bit of more of the world. I've seen the world from that darker place. I was like, I know how that world was or could have been.
, I don't know for a fact 'cause I didn't live it. . I didn't think their grittiness was gonna be there, and I didn't think it was gonna get me. , I was very surprised. I was like the, I don't think the R-rated cuts needed.
No, it's really not. And it really shown through and , the honesty and the truth of the movie was there. . This movie nailed it with a family rating of pg, I am interested what the R rated version looks like. It's probably like jango and absolutely. Probably, , and the main pivotal characters, , Herman Boone and Bill Yost and Gary Gertie and Julius Campbell, like, the world needs more people like that and mm-hmm.
Frankly, like there, there's nothing cliche or, , foil about those, , static I should say about , those four, four characters. Like, they're so strong and mm-hmm. Something to admire, honestly. Well, it goes back to , the simple quote from Anne Frank. Like, it's just like she really believed people were good at heart.
And as much as like, we look at our world now and, and let's be honest out there, statistically the world we're living in now is the safest it's ever been, but it doesn't mean that we're not still going through, they're still evils. There's still exactly horribleness things, horrible things. It's just now everything's in our face and we see it.
, Things were, things are bad now. Things are bad now, but things were bad then too. Yeah. And some might argue or make an argument that they were worse in some ways, especially for a lot of different groups of people that we don't even need to get into that, but like.
That's a different podcast. Yeah. That's not exactly, but , this is not minimizing what we're going through right now as a society on whatever, , section of the spectrum. You land on it, it's still tough. And I think this is a good reminder again, that it, that doesn't need to consume us, that doesn't need to be our identity.
That can, it can be something we can work through together if we choose to. It's pe it petty differences at the end of the day. Petty. Yeah, good point. Petty Petty's a good way to say that. Yeah. None of this shit should matter. No, and it does. And it still does to this day. And I think that's why this movie holds up, in my opinion.
Because you can show a kid this, this day and he can go to school, or she can go to school and find a situation that they just saw in this movie still in the year 2025. Mm-hmm. Which is horse shit. Mm-hmm. But it's the way it works. , Things have come a long way. Things have regressed too, in some ways.
Mm-hmm. And we're not gonna go into a political podcast. That's not what we're here for. Mm-hmm. But at the end of the day, this holds up because it is a segment of history that we cannot forget because we can't go back. Yeah. Mm-hmm. And , one other thing, and this is somewhat superficial compared to what we.
We've been talking about, but one of the reasons that I love sports, it's 'cause it brings people together, the community. It really does. Yeah. Think about it like, how many other instances are you gonna have, , 80,000 people together. Correct. How. Yes. Sports doesn't necessarily mean much in the grand scheme of things, but it brings people together.
It unifies people. And I think that is something that, again, it sounds cliche, but it is, , it's a beautiful thing when everyone can be behind one another in rhythm, in sync. And you don't get that at all times in everyday life. Where, with sports, well think about the, think about how sports also piss us off.
Think about me and Kyle this year. Of course with the Braves and the Reds. Yeah. Like highs and lows. But the highs are the absolute most lows. The highs are the absolute best man. They are, the lows are the absolute worst., But the unity is real. It really is. So Andrew, it holds up, right? A hundred percent.
Kyle, it holds up, right
Kyle? Yes. Very dramatic there. I love it. Just like a Disney movie. Yeah. No, there it is. It holds up. So without a doubt. Yeah. , There's nothing else we could say now , to be honest, , I thought I was going to when , went into watching it, but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Yeah.
I really didn't. Yeah. I walked in. Yeah. , What would you give it? IMBD being IMDB rating? You know, it's not, it's not poorly written. It's pretty well acted. I'm not gonna put it in the eights, uh, but I'll give it like a 7.4 or 7.5. I'll do 7.5. Kyle, what would you say? , What do I think IMDB rating is? No, what's your IMDB rating?
Is, it doesn't matter. My, my rating is gonna be a, probably a 7.72 points taken off for some of the cheesiness. I said seven one. Yeah. Which is pretty high praise for me if you know me. , I just, that just, I, and I give it extra points just for the fact that it,, I was so astounded at how much I enjoyed it as an adult.
Do y'all know what it is? Actually on IM DB 7 6, 7 0.8. So we weren't too far. Wow. We pretty close. , It is voted the best sports movie multiple times over. , It probably sense, it's probably in the triumph. What would you say is a better sports movie? I think Rudy would be up there. Honestly, no, not Rudy.
He was all sides. But it's a great movie. Shit, man. Me personally, , this is kind of a deep cut, but there's a movie called The Greatest Game Ever Played with Shy Lafa. Yeah. Yeah. I think that is a phenomenal sports movie. Like one of the best. Okay. , 10 Cups a great movie. , Miracle. Miracle About Miracle and Ice.
Miracle, I would say Miracle. So fucking probably one of the best. , That's great. I still think this one takes the cake. Like I, this one I can always come back to. It just sticks out. What about Hoosiers? Hoosiers is great. Yeah. Hoosiers is, I love Ho Hoosiers man. , , bull Durham was always good.
Yeah. Yeah. , Kyle, what about you? What's some of your favorite sports movies? , Major League also gets me, every time I coach Carter's, coach Carter would be up there a hundred percent. Coach Carter's good. Coach Carter's good. Coach Carter is more like that R rated version of remember that? I, but it's so good.
Yeah. , Not Cool Runnings, , no thanks Sandlots ever rated. I'll say it right here on this podcast. We would probably just, . We gotta, we still gotta do that. This is another one people have been asking i i, for a long time. Well, it'll happen. We'll get to baseball season. I watched this on the flight to New Mexico was, , past Thursday.
, I fucking love Moneyball. The movie Ball Moneyball is good. I think Moneyball is Ball is good, so fucking good. One of, actually, that's one of my favorite movies of all time. But again, , would you put the Longest Yard, the original longest yard in this conversation? Yeah. Yeah. It's a great one. Yeah, it's a great one.
Would you consider Rocky a sports movie? Kind of Rocky would be the top if that's the case, but a lot of people put, don't put it as a sports movie. Caddy Shack. Would that be a sports movie?
I mean, CAD,
yeah, I guess so. That's definitely a sports movie.
